According to Billboard, Spotify has announced an increase in its U.S. premium subscription fee to $10.99, incorporating 15 hours of audiobooks monthly. However, this seemingly beneficial change for songwriters, expected to enhance U.S. mechanical royalties, comes with a catch.
By integrating audiobooks, Spotify now qualifies to pay a reduced "bundle" rate for music streams, which would result in an estimated $150 million less in songwriter and publisher royalties over the next 12 months. This new categorization also extends to Spotify's duo and family plans. Despite a projected overall increase in payouts in 2024, this shift could significantly lower the royalties songwriters and publishers earn from these plans.
Critics, including the National Music Publishers’ Association, view this move as a strategic reduction in songwriter compensation and are exploring counteractions. This change, currently limited to the U.S., might influence global markets if Spotify uses this model in future negotiations abroad. |
